3-D Gun Printing: Here’s the Software That Stops It

New software has been developed that aims to restrict the manufacture of firearms that have been created using new 3-D technology.

The world’s first gun made using 3-D printing – called “The Liberator” – was successfully fired on May 6 in Austin, Texas. In just three days the blueprint created by startup Defense Distributed to produce the plastic gun had been downloaded around 100,000 times, according to Forbes Magazine.

Anti-gun campaigners have criticized the project, whilst lawmakers in different U.S. states have moved to pass new legislation to prohibit the manufacture, sale and use of the digitally made firearms. And now Danish startup Create It REAL has produced software that it says blocks users from printing guns in the first place.

“The likely buyers are 3-D printer manufacturers who want to minimize their liability risk and offer a firearm parental control feature to their customers,” Create It REAL’s CEO Jeremie Pierre Gay told CNBC.

“The feature creates a unique digital fingerprint of the firearm…the manufacturer could decide to block the print or to simply give a warning to the user of the potential danger.”

The software has taken a year to develop. The firm realized there was a gap in the market after surveying end users and 3D printer manufacturers. Gay told CNBC that his previous job working with Digital Rights Management (DRM) for technology firm Motorola served him well.

“[We realized] people are interested in the ability to put a lock on their firearms at home, the same should be possible on a 3D printer as a parental control feature. I would say that this feature is customer driven even if they did not know they wanted the feature when we asked,” he said.

“The possibility to make a firearm at home is not new, there are many plans on how to do it on Internet, the problem with 3-D printing is that it could become simply too easy, this feature makes it more complicated again.”

Cody Wilson, the man behind nonprofit Defense Distributed was skeptical that the product would actually be able to prohibit the printing of guns, which are produced as separate parts and then assembled. “The Liberator” is printed with hard plastic and fires a standard .380 caliber bullet. The only non-printed piece is a common hardware store nail which is used as its firing pin.

“Such software must walk a very fine line, of which I’ve no doubt it is incapable…It’s interesting PR to the uninitiated only,” the 25-year-old law student at the University of Texas told CNBC.

“‘The Liberator’ pistol is an assembly of over 17 parts, most of which individually would not set off a detection software unless the exact model was blacklisted. Think about it, springs, hammer, even the grip. These are not ‘guns’.”

‘Wild West’ Regulation

Both New York City and New York State have introduced legislation to curb the making of 3-D printed firearms or ban their use altogether and similar bills have been introduced in California. Linda Rosenthal, a New York State assembly member told CNBC that New York’s bill is currently sitting with the Codes Committee after the legislative session ended on June 21.

“I have all intentions of pursuing this legislation next session,” she told CNBC. “The controversy surrounding the passage of the SAFE ACT (the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act) will make passing any piece of gun-related legislation that much more difficult, but I think this is a very important issue that must be addressed before the technology becomes widely available.”

New York State should act as a leader to provide a national model for other states to follow, Rosenthal said, and welcomes the new software that she says is effectively the industry regulating its own behavior.

“It is important that industry and government partner with each other to address this issue. Neither acting alone will be able to accomplish enough to deter dangerous behavior….Given that no technology is foolproof, it is critical that the states have strong tools available to discourage wrongdoing and criminalize bad behavior,” she told CNBC.

“3D printing is a very new technology, and in terms of regulation, it is the Wild West out there.”

Despite the issues surrounding the manufacture of firearms, 3-D printing – creating three-dimensional solid objects from digital models – is gathering momentum and is transforming everything from medicine to home goods. Printers that once cost $30,000 now are priced closer to $1,000 and have the potential to rewrite the rules of global manufacturing.

The market for 3-D printing was estimated at about $1.7 billion in 2011 and could hit $6.5 billion by 2019, according to research firm Wohlers Associates.

Adobe Digital Marketing Forum — Adobe Systems Incorporated (ADBE) today announced the availability of the all-new Adobe® Social, which now features integration with Flickr, Foursquare, Instagram and LinkedIn, in addition to social predictive publishing capabilities, a mobile user interface, streamlined reporting, and new collaborative features. Adobe Social is the first solution specifically designed to leverage the new Adobe Marketing Cloud interface, which enables on-the-go marketing capabilities from any device. Adobe Social, a key element of Adobe Marketing Cloud, enables marketers to scale social marketing across their organizations, listen and respond to customer conversations, and connect the dots between social interactions and business results.

“Today’s social marketers are challenged to validate their social spend,” said Bill Ingram, vice president of product management, Digital Marketing, Adobe. “Adobe Social makes it easy to measure business impact from social campaigns and use that data to optimize strategy in a highly visual format.”

On a daily basis, social marketers attempt to listen to the vast amounts of available social data, use that data to publish compelling content and then create better digital experiences for their audience. With that in mind, Adobe Social is now integrated with Flickr, Foursquare and Instagram, which complement existing integrations with Facebook, Google+, Reddit, Tumblr, Twitter, YouTube and many more to offer the most comprehensive understanding of social conversations, consumer behavior, and real-time trends. Access to local-mobile data will help social marketers understand the movement in customer check-ins, the competitive landscape, and how localized marketing initiatives align with specific venue check-in data.

Adobe Social is also adding the ability to publish content to and analyze metrics associated with LinkedIn Company Pages and Groups, features that will support relationship-building on this critical professional network. Adobe’s Kuler beta site resurrects photo-color picker

Adobe Systems has launched a beta version to try out changes to its color-picker Kuler service, including the restoration of an earlier feature to extract dominant colors from photos.

Kuler lets people assemble quintets of colors into a color scheme that’s saved into their own archive; people can browse others’ schemes as well. The colors can be imported into Adobe’s Illustrator software, too.

The photo tool is available by loading the new Kuler beta site. Adobe said Monday it’s seeking feedback on the changes, which it may or may not keep. Adobe also provided an option to use a less obtrusive color wheel and to shrink borders around colors so designers can better judge how they look together.

Kuler is useful, though hardly a heavyweight app like Photoshop or After Effects. But it’s interesting to watch since it’s got new-era online, collaborative, and social aspects that seem to be a priority for Adobe as it tries to convince skeptics that its $50-per-month Creative Cloud subscription is more than just a new way to pay for the old Creative Suitesoftware.

When Adobe cut over to its Creative Cloud subscription program, it introduced an iOS app that also can pick a color scheme from a photo.

Adobe once had a Kuler app for Android, but scrapped it and is channeling its resources toward the Kuler Web interface at present.

In response to a request for a Kuler Android app, an Adobe staff member had this to say:

While the iOS app and the discontinued Android app do have similar capabilities, they are actually quite a bit different. We have found that people use tablets and mobile phones very differently. So, we created the iPhone app with a different focus in mind — which translated to different features, UI, and interactions.

We have also found the tasks most people wanted to accomplish with Kuler, on a tablet device, are very similar to the tasks people undertake with the Kuler website. So, we’ve invested a lot of time and effort into updating the site to embrace the latest Web standards (also announced at MAX). And, it should work really well on Android and iOS tablets. We look forward to getting these updates in the hands of users to hear what they think.

We understand there are many Android phone users who may find an app like the Kuler iPhone app useful, and we’ll monitor demand for that over time.

In my tests on a Nexus 7 tablet, I was able to use the normal Kuler site, but the photo upload and color-wheel shrinking features had some problems. I could use photos I took on the spot and from the photo gallery, but imports from Google+ galleries, Dropbox, and Google Drive failed. Worse, the color wheel for picking colors by hand didn’t work with my touch screen.

Software for Smooth Action Plow Car Found

New York – Hacking a car is not a new field, but the secret of ‘success’ steal grounded sophisticated control of the car during the closed meeting. recently, two peratas successfully decode software commonly used among others by car thieves to disable siatem safety and escape easily incarannya car.

Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, the two hackers, said they would publish details of engineering blueprint to attack the security system in the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape. This 100-page findings compiled after several months of research they conducted with a grant from the U.S. government Sserikat.

Two “white hats” – the nickname for hackers who try to uncover software vulnerabilities before criminals can exploit them – also will release software that they built for hacking a car in a hacker convention in Las Vegas this week.

They say they found a way to force Toyota Prius brake suddenly at a speed of 80 miles per hour, determine the direction of the steering wheel, to speed up the machine. They also say that they can disable the brakes of the Ford Escape at very slow speeds, so the car continued to move no matter how hard the driver depresses the pedal.

Both men said they hope the data they publish will encourage other white hat hackers to uncover security flaws more advanced automotive products that can be fixed.

“I believe the 100 eyes of security researchers more powerful than the eyes that are in Ford and Toyota,” said Miller, a well-known security expert who was formerly known Twitter reveals burglary of Apple Inc. App Store.

Toyota Motor Corp. spokesman John Hanson said the company is reviewing its security systems car after referring to their findings. He said the automaker to invest in electronic security, although they acknowledge hackers continue to find loopholes.
